How to Prepare Pallets for Freight in Sydney: A Checklist to Avoid Delays and Damage
Most pallet freight problems start before the truck arrives. A loose wrap, a missing label or a wrong weight can mean damaged stock, a failed pickup or a re-delivery charge. The good news: a few minutes of preparation fixes almost all of it.
Here is the checklist we share with customers moving pallets across Sydney metro, Western Sydney and regional NSW.
1. Start with a sound pallet
Use a standard Australian pallet (1165 × 1165 mm) where you can, and check it before loading. Broken boards, missing blocks or protruding nails can fail during forklift handling. If the pallet is damaged, swap it out — it costs far less than the stock on top.
2. Stack it square and stable
- Put the heaviest cartons on the bottom
- Keep the load inside the pallet edges — no overhang
- Stack in a brick pattern so cartons interlock
- Keep the top flat so other freight is not damaged
- Tell us if the pallet is fragile or cannot be double-stacked
3. Wrap and strap it properly
Wrap the load tightly with stretch film, starting at the base and wrapping the pallet itself into the film. Add several layers at the top and bottom. For heavy, tall or slippery loads, add strapping and corner boards. A pallet that leans in the warehouse will lean more on the road.
4. Give us accurate dimensions and weight
Measure length, width and height (including the pallet) and weigh it if you can. Accurate details let us send the right truck, plan the load and give you a firm quote. Under-declared weights are a common cause of delays and extra charges.
5. Label every pallet clearly
Each pallet should show:
- Receiver name and full delivery address
- Contact name and phone number at delivery
- Your job or reference number
- Pallet count, e.g. “1 of 3”
- Handling notes such as “Fragile” or “Do not stack”
Put labels on at least two sides so they can be read from any angle.
6. Declare dangerous goods upfront
If anything on the pallet is classed as dangerous goods — even small quantities of chemicals, aerosols or batteries — tell us when you book and supply the Safety Data Sheet. Shams Transport is licensed for dangerous goods transport, but the right paperwork, placarding and segregation must be planned before pickup.
7. Check access at both ends
Let us know if the pickup or delivery site has:
- No forklift or loading dock — we’ll send a tail-lift truck
- Limited opening hours or booking requirements
- Narrow streets, height limits or residential access
- Stairs, gravel or long distances to the drop point
A wasted trip is the most avoidable cost in pallet freight.
